Commitment to Clinical Quality

Currently, there has been a significant paradigm shift around the care provided by the health care system.  For so many years the therapies and treatments provided in health care have been based on knowledge of disease, body systems and gut feeling.  For many years we provided care that we assumed to be applicable and in the best interests of the patient. EMS for many years has been an extension of such philosophies and for many years has treated patients in the pre-hospital care based on assumptions made for patients in the hospital setting.  Only recently has the practice of health care acknowledged and embraced the notion of looking at patient outcomes and evidence before ascribing credibility to proposed medical treatments.

The concept of evidence based medicine is about solving clinical problems. This concept demonstrates a shift from traditional thinking and focuses on the examination of evidence from clinical research. EMS is probably one of the most under published health professions in terms of research. We work with a distinct patient group in a very distinct environment. We see and treat patients in the most acute phases of their disease or injury, therefore, we are in a very unique position to influence the outcome, make observations and collect critical clinical data.

Medavie EMS is committed to diligence in measuring the quality of care that we provide and rely on and encourage clinical decision making based upon evidence. We measure a host of clinical indicators and tracer conditions daily and report regularly to our stakeholders, particularly our medical directors. We continue to develop and identify useful clinical care measures that will provide us with the best evidence with which to improve patient outcomes. As well, we monitor the current evidence and new research and in collaboration with our medical directors, adjust our medical procedures and protocols accordingly.
