Prior Learning Project

September 1st, 2010, Ambulance New Brunswick (ANB) introduced to paramedics the Prior Learning Project (PLP)! The PLP is a process to help ANB individualize paramedic learning needs, while enabling them to develop an individual portfolio of prior learning relevant to their EMS education and experience.

The PLP process identifies, documents and assesses learning, abilities and understanding acquired through formal and informal study. This provides an opportunity for paramedics to identify personal strengths and abilities, set career and life goals, and validate learning gained through work and life experience. Ongoing ANB education will also be focused on individual paramedic needs, rather than a “one-size-fits-all” approach to reduce duplication in training and ensure the addition of new, valuable skills tailored to each employee’s repertoire!

The PLP was launched during the fall in-service sessions starting September through October 2010.  We invited paramedics to complete the Prior Learning Project data collection form available online. The PLP collects information such as:

    - Education history;
    - EMS education;
    - Short courses and certifications;
    - Employer provided training;
    - Employment experience; and
    - Other EMS related training, education and experience.

Completion of the ANB prior learning process is the first step for paramedics who wish to have their knowledge, skills and abilities evaluated against a particular educational credential or an occupational standard.  This evaluation is called “Recognition of Prior Learning” (RPL) and is used by educational institutions to award formal credit for prior learning.

Participation in a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process may be of value to paramedic preceptors or to those who would like to further their paramedic education such as completing an ACP program!
